For future truck drivers in West Virginia, there is a new truck driver training opportunity available. New River Community and Technical College located in Beaver, West Virginia has planned CDL classes for spring 2018. Find out what you need to know to register for this CDL training and what to expect from the program.
CDL Classes in West Virginia
New River Community and Technical College are currently enrolling student drivers for three classes. The classes are scheduled to begin on:
January 15, 2018 March 5, 2018
- April 23, 2018
The reason for the three separate classes is to meet the growing need for individuals trying to get a truck driver license. According to Gloria Kincaid, the program specialist at New River, “This is a great program for those looking to train for a new career as there is a high demand for Class A CDL drivers. There is normally a wait list, so, we have scheduled three classes to meet the need.”
The program is provided via the New River Community and Technical College Workforce Education Division. Along with providing students with valuable job skills, the program provides students with noncredit courses. This means you are not required to apply to college and pay tuition fees in order to register for this CDL class.
What to Expect in Class
Students who are successfully admitted into the CDL class at New River will be provided with six weeks of instruction. The class will be held Monday to Thursday for the consecutive six weeks beginning with the dates mentioned previously. Hours of the class are 8 am to 4 pm.
During this time, students gain 180 contact hours with instructors. This instruction provides students with everything they need to be able to pass the commercial driver’s license exam in West Virginia. Note that just because a student completes the class, this does not guarantee that they will successfully get their CDL. However, they will have the skills and information they need to pass the exam if they answer the exam questions correctly.
How to Register for the CDL Class
If you are interested in taking a CDL class at New River, you are required to preregister for the program. This involves contacting the school at least one week prior to the date of the class you want to enroll in. To increase your chances of getting into a class, register as soon as possible. Due to the high demand, once the class is filled for a session, you may be able to register for the next occurring class.
You will also need to have a commercial learner’s permit before you can start the class. This learner’s permit is available at your local Department of Motor Vehicles, the same place where you will take the CDL exam after you pass the class. In order to help students pass the learner’s permit exam, New River offers learner’s permit classes throughout the year. Contact the school at 304-793-6101 for more information about registering for the learner’s permit and CDL class.
Benefits of Going to CDL Classes
As you start out on your journey to be a commercial truck driver, you need to do everything you can to become qualified for this line of work. Trucking companies are most interested in hiring qualified drivers over anyone else. How do you become qualified? Start by getting the best CDL training you can. By going to a community college, such as New River CTC, you are able to get a certificate from a reputable learning institute. This shows your ability to be professional and your desire to learn in an accredited school setting.
You are already one step ahead of the competition by going to a CDL class. However, there is more you can do to show that you are qualified for truck driving jobs. Excel in the CDL class and take on as much behind the wheel training as you can. When the instructor asks who needs more hands-on time in the rig, stick your hand up and be the first in line. The more of this type of experience you can get, the more likely you are to pass your CDL and have the knowledge needed when you get out there in the real world of trucking.
A final move you can make is to start searching for trucking jobs at Big Truck Driving Jobs now. Have an idea in mind of the company you want to drive for when you complete CDL training and get your license.
